When I was in college, I showed my professor a poem I had written. I was proud of that poem, but all my professor said was, “Nice.” “You don’t like it,” I said. “You haven’t suffered enough,” he said. I asked him if I had to suffer before I could write poetry, and he said,”Yep.”
Now years later, I have published a thin volume of poetry that reflects my fascination with the flesh and blood people of the Bible, their struggles, their wars, their devotion to their Redeemer. As I wrote poems through the years, tinkering with them until I couldn’t fix them any more, I tried to portray my worship and love for my beloved Savior. My collection is titled “Seeing From a Distance.” I am convinced that what we see in our earthly lives cannot compare with the beauty of Heaven which we see only in a dark glass. Here is one of my poems.
Prayer
Risen Lord, your child asks
one favor, one you granted once
when there before your unscarred feet
she knelt, not pleading any cause,
but loving Thee beyond herself.
Please, Lord, that I may wash
with tears your resurrected feet
and dry them with my hair.
